Irish history spans over 2500 years — from Celtic tribes, Christianization, Viking invasions, Norman conquest, British rule, Great Famine, to independence 1922 and modern Ireland.

Celts and Early Christianity (500 BC – 800 AD)

Celts arrived ~500 BC. Saint Patrick brought Christianity ~432 AD — converted Ireland. "Land of Saints and Scholars" — Irish monks preserved European learning during Dark Ages, founded monasteries across Europe.

Viking Invasions (795–1014)

Vikings raided from 795, founded Dublin, Cork, Waterford. Brian Boru defeated Vikings at Battle of Clontarf 1014 — but died in the battle.

Norman Conquest (1169) and English Rule

Norman invasion 1169-1171 — England's first conquest. Henry II claimed Ireland. Centuries of partial English control, Pale around Dublin.

Tudor Conquest and Plantations (1500s–1600s)

Henry VIII declared King of Ireland 1541. Elizabethan and Cromwellian conquests brutal. Plantation of Ulster — English/Scottish Protestants settled, dispossessing Irish Catholics.

Great Famine (1845–1852)

Potato blight caused 1 million Irish to die from starvation/disease. 1 million emigrated (mainly to USA). Population halved from 8 to 4 million. Trauma still felt today.

Independence Struggle (1916–1922)

Easter Rising 1916 — failed but inspired revolution. Irish War of Independence 1919-1921. Anglo-Irish Treaty 1921 — Ireland (26 counties) became Free State, Northern Ireland (6 counties) stayed UK. Civil war 1922-23.

Republic and Troubles (1937–1998)

Republic of Ireland 1937. Northern Ireland "Troubles" 1968-1998: 3,500 dead. Good Friday Agreement 1998 brought peace.

Modern Ireland

5.1 million inhabitants. EU member 1973. "Celtic Tiger" economic boom 1990s-2007. Today tech hub (Google, Facebook, Apple HQ Europe). Constitution recognizes Irish language. Famous for literature: 4 Nobel laureates (Yeats, Shaw, Beckett, Heaney).
